4 Billion Euro in Foreign Investment Expected by Bulgaria in 2007This year, Bulgaria is expecting to attract investors with a total of four billion euro in investment projects. Preliminary projections show that the four billion mark will come from direct investments. According to the InvestBulgaria Agency, it has been recorded that 3.5 billion euro has been invested to Bulgaria in 2006. The record high figure came from foreign deals and projects alone. The head of InvestBulgaria Agency, Stovan Stalev, in an interview with private national channel bTV, said that about 20 percent to 30 percent of growth is expected this year. This projected growth will be the result of foreign investments. Staley reported that Bulgaria’s tourism and real estate industries spawned almost 35 percent of the foreign investments. In order for Bulgaria to increase the amount from last year, the country should consider bigger investments in terms of developing infrastructure. SEE news also quoted Staley saying that Bulgaria has yet to fully fulfill its potential as a hub for foreign investments. Bulgaria recently entered the European Union and should look further into developing its appeal to foreign businessmen. Staley shared that there are measures that should be done so the business scene in Bulgaria can improve further. One way to do this is to tap labor hand from neighboring countries such as Belarus, Ukraine and Russia. Doing so is an attempt to encourage emigrants from Bulgaria who have settled to there to go back to their homeland. It has been estimated that when the transition from communism began in Bulgaria, more that 1.5 million people have left the country.
